Static Electricity

We were reading a book at the end of the day that talked about static electricity so we did some quick exploring with balloons and tissue paper.

If you want to find out more click on the images below. Try out some of the other investigations at home - we would love to hear about what you discover.

Autumn Fun

Starry Night Paintings

We have nearly finished our paintings inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night. We have finished doing the sky using the techniques of double loading and pointillism and today completed the hills in the background before starting on the field in the foreground.

Check out the Art page to find out more about this artist.

Bill Nye the Science Guy Clips

Click on the images below to see the clips we looked at in class about electricity.

What uses electricity?

This afternoon we talked about things that need energy in order to work. Our group challenge was to find as many pictures of objects that use electricity from magazines as we could in ten minutes. Each person had a different job to do; materials manager, recorder, time keeper or reporter. Tomorrow we will talk about what we have found.

Science Alive - Electrifying Electricity

The atmosphere was electrifying in Room 18 this morning.  We learnt about electricity, power sources, batteries, currents, electrons, circuits (series and parallel) and circuit diagrams , LEDs, switches, conductors and insulators. How many can you explain to someone at home?

Once we had this sussed everyone got to build their own night light. They looked very impressive when we pulled the curtains and made the room darker.

If you want to try some of these ideas at home you can get the kits from Electroflash. Many of the children wanted this link to their website so I have put it on the image below. Alternatively there are some fun BrainBox kits you can pick up online and at retail outlets.

Wombling

This week it was our turn to do Wombling. This involves heading out after lunch to clean up any rubbish that has been left in the playground or that has blown in from around the school. Many of the children aren't familiar with the Wombles so we looked at the YouTube clip below, now I can't get the song out of my head.
